# What Is Repair Availability? | Designing Products That Can Be Restored and Used After Failure

## Summary

A chip resistor or SMD fuse is not necessarily unrepairable simply because it is surface-mounted. Full-board replacement can result from integration, diagnostic access, safety revalidation, available spare parts, or a manufacturer’s service policy. Repair Availability is the capacity to diagnose and safely restore a product at reasonable time and cost, replace time-limited modules, and—where its architecture permits—upgrade to newer technology while keeping usable equipment in service.
